A beautiful and hardwearing option for inside, an expensive and problematic option for outside!
Honing or polishing is almost never a cost effective option to rejuvenate your old exterior concrete areas (a common question). A quality polished concrete floor starts with pouring a specific mix of concrete that is designed to be polished. You will also need to minimise cracking so your exterior concrete should be engineered with this in mind (usually thicker with heavier steel). Cracking is an inherent characteristic of concrete that is particularly devastating in a polished concrete floor. As I write this I can look down to my over-engineered polished slab and see a crack at my feet. It’s not for the feint-hearted!
When these construction costs are combined with the actual grinding and polishing or sealing costs the square metre rate is typically well above what you would pay for tiles.
For this reason we rarely do polished concrete outside and are not set up to do it ourselves. Instead we are happy to talk mix design and can pour your external concrete so it is compatible with polishing . We can then recommend a contractor on the coast to finish the job.
